Heat and summer in the big city is tricky business. Lives were lost during the summer in senior care centers without AC. Now it's mandatory. Cooling centers are located throughout the city. Kamala and fresh air... I am hopeful.
I see a lot of excitement & enthusiasm & hope now that Kamala Harris is anticipated to be our Democratic candidate for President. I live in Florida where the number of registered Republicans (5,257,407) exceed registered Democrats (4,300,964) by almost a million voters (as of 07/12/24). Our radical Republican Governor DeSantis has forbidden talking of climate change, as if ignoring it will make it go away, even as streets in Miami flood when the high tide & a full moon align. I hope sanity prevails, and enough voters here in the USA vote to save our representative democracy, which will give us an opportunity to save our planet from the destructive path we are presently walking down.
I believe Kamala is on a fast track to win the presidency and we the people, hot 🥵 and election fatigued, grateful for her will press harder for immediate and sustained action on climate. We can eliminate Trump and attack climate which he would never have done. 🌎🕊️
Extreme heat changes things - people, dispositions, living conditions, security. Just another way climate impacts our lives in ways that are often overlooked.
As always, the vulnerable and underprivileged suffer most.
I hope changes in the political climate in US can make a difference with responsible leadership. The alternative is unthinkable.
Yes, the consequences of the alternative are unthinkable: it will be the end of democracy as we know it, and it will significantly weaken the rules-based International order. The sad thing is that those who vote for him will mostly be among those who will suffer the consequences.
I don’t know what to think as I read in your article that: “…significant research has established that higher temperatures correlate with increased crime rates, particularly violent crimes.”
Not good, that violence.
Then about the new candidate for presidency in the US you wrote « a fresh breeze can work like magic. »
For me that fresh breeze being brought by Kamala Harris, I welcome it very much and my hope for solutions broadens.
“… Reflecting on this conversation 26 years later, I realize it was my first encounter with the concept that temperature could influence security.”
I want here also to emphasize on your souvenir from 26 years. It reveals to me that trajectories and personalities are influenced by interests we have and conversations with fellow citizens.
I’m thankful to you for that and wish you great success in this mission.
Germany won in 1996 😊 - I was living in CA and was an assistant coach for a girl's soccer team. It was also around that time that Ruud Gullit was randomly sitting on a neighbor's patio. This was back in Switzerland and I almost fell off my bike in̈ shock.
I've never liked summer. Too hot. Now it's getting unbearable. Especially with no AC.
I worry about people's lives in this heat. Add to that the security aspect and we're doomed. As you say, a cool breeze can make a lot of difference. Very hopeful that Kamala Harris can provide this.

So am I 😊

Yea, I share your hope that sanity prevails. I think that next week the first poll results could emerge, I’m eagerly waiting for those results.

Yes it can be done. After all, the majority of Americans does not support Trump.
Good article.

Yes it broadens my hope too.

When faced with “hot-blooded” people, it’s better to “keep a cool head”!
How true this maxim is…
Several studies have in fact shown that global warming makes people more aggressive (verbally but also physically).
Man's capacity (although gifted with reason) to control himself, to master himself, is unfortunately limited in the face of rising temperatures.
So yes, a “breath of fresh air” would be welcome to help to calm down the clashes of all kinds that we are witnessing more and more…
I share so much your hope 🙏🙏
A Little wink: After several days of heatwave, the refreshing rain ☔️ decided to invite itself to the Olympic Games ceremony...🕊️
Perhaps we avoided collective scuffles!…

She will. And I remember seeing Ruud Gullit randomly sitting in a cafe in Chelsea around the same time. 😊
He was busy drinking coffee 😉
