You are fortunate to have excellent opportunities for train travel in Europe. In my country it’s much less accessible. I agree traveling by train is a wonderful experience. My favorite train trip was taking the Chunnel from London to Paris. Absolutely delightful!

Although the environmental benefits are greatest, these extraordinary photos make a terrific case for taking the train. They are stunning!

I look forward to the weekend!

You Europeans and your excellent trains.

As for my own trips, I loved train travel across countries when I was a study-abroad student in Austria. Changing the crew and engine was fascinating to me, along with passport control. Now it's blink-and-you-miss-it crossing borders.

Several years ago, I accompanied my mother on her bucket list train travel from Chicago to the Grand Canyon in Arizona. We had a sleeper car, ate on the train, etc. Not sure I would do that again, but I enjoyed it.

I must admit, I love trains anyway but not in the trainspotter sense! I have great memories of journeys taken by train, in fact it's given me an idea for a post on Rambling Photographer... Looking forward to seeing more of Paris through your eyes Alexander :-)

The photo of Switzerland is reminiscent of my visit there so rare, clean, flowers everywhere. In window boxes, pots on the streets, colors blooming. Have not had the chance to personally visit Paris but the painters are enchanting. One train trip in the USA through the mountains in the fall in the Southeast; the view between the cars was lovely but windows so small and old, did not offer a view.

My home in Birmingham was a hub for freight trains but not passengers. Perhaps that infrastructure could be used for travel to get cars (CO2 emissions) off highways. It’s an idea coming back from times past. The fuel would need to be reconsidered.

I hope I’m not expected to keep my answer short. Well, the short answer would be – I can’t pick.

I live in one of the best countries for train travel so I guess I’m spoiled. Today I spent about 7.5 hours on 9 trains, 3 buses and 1 cable car.

In Switzerland all train lines of the RhB (Rhätische Bahn) are amazing. That’s those red trains you see up in the mountains. One of the best is through the Rhine Gorge – that used to be part of my commute. Any cog rail is great. The one I shared a picture of on Twitter is beautiful; the one up Mt. Rigi is a favorite of mine. Then there is also the train line along Lake Brienz (another picture to be found on twitter). And when I take the train to Geneva when you can see Lake Geneva – I always gasp it’s so pretty. Taking the train from Zurich to Schaffhausen when it goes past the Rhine Falls. Try it! Don’t forget to take the train through the longest rail tunnel in the world.

Ages ago I traveled all over Northern Europe by train/bus (no trains in most of Northern Norway). I’m really excited that they are re-introducing night trains. One to Amsterdam, I’ve seen ads for. I’ve taken the train to Stockholm, Oslo, Copenhagen; from Helsinki up north to Rovaniemi and then across to Narvik; and then from Bodø south. One of my favorite train rides was the one from Bergen to Olso and also the Flåm train. Taken the train from Oslo to Lillehammer a few times. Sooooo pretty in winter. Helsinki -Rovaniemi might have been the most comfortable train I’ve ever been on.

I love meeting people on trains. I love being able to move around. I love being able to bring my own food. I love looking out the window and daydream or take pictures. I had an awesome train day today. Sorry, got a bit excited. You should all come to Switzerland or Europe in general and ride our trains.

And I haven’t been to Paris, so really excited to see more of your pictures. I should really go - it’s a pretty short train ride away.

I love the train! Unfortunately, the train system here in NC is not very efficient; it’s not set up for easy travel and there are lots of delays. Lovely scenery!
