Island Stories #35: View from the 'Haven van Renesse'. If you followed my 'Island Stories' this summer, you might have noted how often harbors played a role in the fortunes of cities and islands in Zeeland. Access to the sea was vital for trade and fishing, but the silting up of most ports in this large delta in the southwest of the Netherlands often ended a period of prosperity.
Thank you for the beautiful Island stories, photos and videos. I really enjoy them. I hope you are able to enjoy the holidays and also get enough time to rest and recharge. Wishing you a nice Sunday, Alexander.
What a wonderful vision to wake up to this morning! Perfect for a Sunday! Those beautiful horses galloping on the beach & then returning in a leisurely stroll. But maybe thatâs a second group. The heavy clouds & waning sunlight create an end of day ambience that must have added to your dining enjoyment. The photos of the dunes & restaurant are lovely but, oh, that sunset! Spectacular with the dramatic clouds!
The details & history you add always round out the story & provide extra appeal.
Itâs marvelous! Who wouldnât fall in love with this little piece of heaven you call home!
Can see why you love that island. It is a perfect spot to spend relaxing time either walking in town or on the dunes and beach. Always love eating in a restaurant by the shore. It adds to the ambience of dining. Thanks for the video of the horses. Surely an enjoyable ride.
Cool capture, of a nice horseback riding group dash on the beach video, and sunset pix in spite of the rain. The sea must come pretty far up the beach, looking at the poles underneath the restaurant. Configured for high tide time or a storm, I would think. I love these somber rainy deep colors in your photos (-:
I believe the restaurant is built at 8 meters, and this is one of the beach restaurants that stays open the full year. Many in the Netherlands are still broken down at the end of the season and rebuild in springtime.
Happy to hear that. I always count on subscribers reading The Planet while enjoying their morning coffee, which makes the timing of sending out the newsletter a challenge. I am now back at 1 pm in Europe, which is 7 am ET. Too late for morning coffee in Amsterdam and too early for morning coffee in NYC...
So beautiful. Those pictures are stunning. Love the bikes parked in from of "De Haven van Renesse". I can just picture how lovely it must be to sit there and look out over the beach. That rainy sunset is amazing too and the horses ... what can I say ... just lovely. I think you might have mentioned how much you love your island and I can see why! Thank you for sharing.
Those bikes are likely from some visitors that hoped to bike on the beach, which is something I wouldn't do. Just a few minutes walking back inland, at the foot of the dunes, are hundreds of bikes.

Thank you, Ricardo, happy to hear that you enjoy the stories (and enjoyed Zeeland too!)

Thanks, Lizzie, yes it was the same group returning, but there are often horses on the beach.

Oh this is breathtaking. Such a lovely thing to look at while having my morning coffee.

Perfect late lunch reading in Europe. Also perfect for those of us who don't drink coffee ;-)

Don't think I've tried biking on the beach, but it does not sound like a good idea. Thanks for the clarification.
This is like a dream...That calmness of the beach and those powerfull horses, both are blending so nicely...â¤
Thank you, yes living here is like that...
Sounds absolutely idyllic!
What a beautiful exhilarating view! Thank you for the video and as always, for sharing your observations and thoughts.
A suggestion, about biking on the beach.
Fat Tire Bikes are perfect for riding in the dunes and to cover beach rides that take days to finish, with camping along the way (-:
