Like MLK's speech, Trump's speech in Washington will forever be part of the country's identity, but the page in the American history book about Trump is the one that suddenly happened to turn black.
Great analysis and reminder of 45's track record of lying. There is nothing truthful about that candidate. With little more than two months before election, we in the US need to remind our neighbors to register and vote. Can't sit this election out. The world depends on it.
At a time when MSM can no longer be trusted to report news and facts fairly, accurately, ethically, it’s more important than ever for independent journalists to take up the yoke. Courage in reporting is becoming a rarity when it’s most critically needed.
Watching the absurd lies of a floundering candidate who is in desperation as opposed to the new energy and hope of the Kamala Harris/Tim Walz campaign is encouraging and uplifting and an enormous contrast to Trump.
Thank you for this article and reminders of a part of US history that will remain a hideous stain. Voices like yours and Lawrence O’Donnell who, with outrage, called out Trump’s lies and the hypocrisy of his colleagues in failing to address falsehood is what we need to be reminded of every day.
It was just that… and everyone will soon realize that his only interests are not those of USA’s citizens.
I agree when you write: “Trump's dream was indeed just that: a dream. It was a dream limited to his persistent need for personal validation by Trump-admiring crowds.”
Otherwise I have no words to express my despise for the despicable way he spoke about women.
Trump feeds his ego only with lies about everything, or could be a reflection of his advancing DEMENTIA as reported by John Gartner and Dr. Bandy X Lee here on Substack. The fresh air and generational change in Harris and Walz is refreshing.
How I wish the major newspapers would stop focusing on the old man “mired in the past” and give us a real history lesson as you did, Alex! They’ve covered the narcissistic 45
since 2015 constantly without paying much attention to the other party’s representatives. We have two months to rectify this situation. I’d like the major newspapers to report on the differences in policies.
Thank you, Anne. I believe most major media companies could do a better job in informing their readers and listeners. To a certain extent, they fall in the same trap as many voters do: judging Trump by a different standard since we all know he’s different and thus gets more room to be weird and dangerous. It’s like not giving a fine to a drunk driver since we all know he can’t be sober. Democracy deserves better scrutiny.

And the whole world watches. Great to see Kamala’s progress in the polls today as just reported by the NYT
Unpleasant flashbacks to his inauguration! I sincerely hope that we never have to face that again. Thank you for such a thoughtful and timely article!
Thanks Louisa.
Yeah, that whole “sore winner” thing. The 2 in the accompanying photo look to be part of that team
Yes they were described as MAGA supporters. No surprises here.
Outstanding article, superb writing!

What a well-written piece. So many examples. So much "winning".
He's delusional.
Great to see that things are starting to turn now. I'm totally here for that. I wish I wasn't only a spectator watching from afar.

Yes, an old man, on top of everything else. It’s a stunning contrast with Kamala Harris.

What a great “column” you wrote yesterday😊 💕
