So is this photo for you mainly dark, cold, and rainy? Or do you instead see the warm glow of the tent where people warm up while they drink hot chocolate and enjoy the show and each other's company? What you see in this photo may reveal more about yourself than about The Hague.
Even on a dark, rainy day - the shortest of the year - you are uplifted by the charms of The Hague. A wealth of memories from time spent in this historic city that seems to captivate. My first reaction to the photo was to be delighted! I love the contrast of the beautiful colors and light leaping from the dark surroundings. The tents glow with beckoning warmth. Perhaps a circus, but my first thought was one of the lovely Christmas markets.
I love your account of the history except for the forest that was sacrificed in vain. Thankfully, some trees remain.
Of all your brilliant writing styles and moods, these are the ones I love best. Itβs wonderful! Thank you.
This was a terrific break from my usual work, and a reminder of the magic of the Winter Solstice and season. The photo of the tents, for me, depict the magic and serenity of the longest night of the year. I was also struck by the images of storks, not previously realizing their significance in Dutch art and culture. The stork is considered a sacred messenger for Armenians, and our art and stories have endless depictions. I love the shared connection! Thank you!
Oliebollenbakkerij - short word indeed ;-). I loved the time I spent in The Hague this summer. Ricardo was a great tour guide. We explored The Hague on bicycles. And after everybody told me to go to Delft, I took a tram there. Just wow! I loved it. I'm definitely going back. I might have hopped off the tram when I saw a windmill without knowing where I was. Fun times.
Thanks for sharing more of The Hague's history and all those colorful pictures. Much needed during the grey winter days we've been having here.
I look forward to the book you'll write one day.
What we see in a work of art and how we interpret that information indeed says volumes more about us than the view.
Me too!
Thank you Alexander !
I love the Christmas lights and miss the Oliebollen (-:
Stay warm
Here we entering an Arctic deep freeze for 2 days. I'm hunkering down in a -20F Expedition sleeping bag!
