Veere is beautiful with so much history! It’s fascinating to think of the centuries of stories these towns hold.

The buildings are wonderfully unique reflecting the culture and character of the past.

I am always amazed and impressed at how immaculate these towns are! Perfectly clean and well maintained. Never a thing out of place. Like model towns from a book.

How interesting about the church providing water for the town. I’d love hearing the reason for the deliberate flooding during WWII. Maybe a story for another day. Very nice article.

In 1944 the allied armies desperately needed a well functioning large-scale harbor to supply their troops. But they also wanted to move to Berlin fast. They put all energy on the second aim, and ignored the access route to Antwerp that had already been liberated. It gave Nazi Germany the time to reinforce the access route to Antwerp that goes through the Dutch territory of Zeeland. The Northern side of the access route is the south coast of Walcheren. They then bombed the dikes so the island of Walcheren was inundated. It is doubtful if this was to the Allied advantage, it likely made concurring the island more complicated.
