Oceans are in trouble, and so are we; climate change, plastic pollution, overfishing, mining, the list is much longer. One of the effects is fish moving away from the equator, while more than three billion people rely on the ocean for their livelihoods.
Between 50% to 80% of our oxygen supply comes from the ocean. At what pH do phytoplankton lose their ability to produce the air we breathe? Global warming may be a lot more "existential" than most people realize.
Too many countries are still doing nothing to stop climate change. All the red flags are there from raising sea levels, droughts, severe storms, wildfires, and extreme heat waves. Until governments truly take action it will only continue to get worse. We only have this planet on which to live. Hope governments wake up.
The growing awareness of troubled Oceans is daunting.
For people who visit the beaches it is not enough to become aware. Except for the litter that washes on shore. Or sailing on the surface vast areas one misses most of it on a personal level too. Satellites and scientist are bringing in the data. We must read, watch movies and learn how to act now while it's getting warmer. Including peoples that live inland.
Presently about 40% of the world's population lives within 100 kilometers of the coast. As population density and economic activity in the coastal zone increases, pressures on coastal ecosystems increase also.
A thing as vast & powerful as the ocean seems invincible so it is hard to imagine its fragility or endangerment. This article, however, brings reality to the plight of a vital part of our planet. It’s excruciating to think how humans have carelessly defiled this beautiful earth mindlessly failing to protect what’s most valuable to our own survival. Thank you for this painful reminder. When I’m on twitter, I spend a lot of time looking at whales and Dolphins these days. Seeing them breach and play gives me joy. I’ve read about the Pink River Dolphin and the role it plays in the mythology of the Amazon river. I’ve even seen a photo of a beluga whale off the California coast near San Diego, a very long way from home. These animals have no commercial value other than people love them and they are deep in our minds, at least in the Amazon. Knowing the oceans are in trouble along with the creatures in them is very sad. I don’t know what to do aside from reducing plastic. My hope is this newsletter, along with other sources, can provide ideas on what to do aside from using cardboard boxes over plastic at the grocery store. Thanks again, Alex.
