Twitter reminds me a bit of the oil industry. This old dominating force still has the money and the power to set the rules while fearing new disruptive developments like innovation in renewable energy. Meanwhile, Substack is new, rapidly growing, constantly innovating, and well-managed by visionary leaders.
Interesting presentation as usual ! I see that many facts are also preventively presented and analyzed ! A complex and complicated situation. Thank you for your article.
I've enjoyed the speed of twitter as I don't like to muck about and can get information I want rather quickly. Alternative social media has proven cumbersome to navigate. At least for me. Zuckerberg product has been dead to me for years. I receive the headlines from all mainstream publications each morning and deep dive in something of interest.

Weaning myself off twitter is the goal and I am at peace with this. Jack knew how to rule his kingdom wisely. The current fool knows nothing about wisdom. Unfortunate.
Elon Musk is clearly obstructing his own platform; cutting off his nose to spite his face. My opinion is no single owner should dictate an entire digital media platform. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. Owners should be public; ie stockholders with CEOs responsible for the reasonable daily operations and preservation of free speech with the unfortunate need to monitor graphic hate speech and exposure to toxic misinformation. Sadly, not all users can be trusted to be moral or responsible people. It is not appropriate for a single man of extreme wealth to be in his position. Thank you for the alert and overview of other sites, options. It seems things will be changing rapidly in the coming months; I look forward to Substack Notes. And I dread the politics of my own country šŗšø becoming more and more prominent on line as we struggle to retain our fragile Democracy. Your long term expertise in digital media is most helpful in characterizing what is happening for those of us with less experience. Thank you for this!
In real time yesterday saw the shut down of Dan Ratherās Substack (his wise words obviously hit a nerve with a particular vacuous billionaire) then harsh misinformation warnings blah blah blah. Immediately began receiving DMs about other Substack suddenly unavailable. Creepy. Iām finding Post boring & slow. I still have my personal & cat IG accounts but only check in 1-2x week.
Twitter has been exasperating and while I knew that Musk was up to some ridiculous antics, I was not aware of the degree! Now I understand why your Tweets have not been coming up, and why junk to which I do not subscribe comes up in my feed. I am not using Twitter like I had in the past, but as you've well explained, there are not so many good alternatives. I signed up with Post, but found it frustrating due to all the glitches. I closed my account. Mastodon seems a bit confusing, and so I've not gone there. Lately, I've been on LinkedIn more. All of this is to say THANK YOU for explaining the situation and for offering alternatives!
Brilliant!
Youāve synopsized the entire matter perfectly!
Nothing to add really. Youāve said it all.
Thank you and I am deeply sorry for the aggravation and disappointment Musk brought to your day and to Twitter in general.
Waiting on Karma. . .

"United we stand, divided we fall" comes to mind.
At this very moment in time we are the end product of 4.543 billion years of cell division.
That is, as long science tells us that currently the Earth is 4.543 billion years old, but maybe the Earth could be older . . . ? āš»
