Yes I can, yes I can. I very much like the small changes I make on a daily basis. The products I shop for, while wondering were they came from, I have grown a lot more conscientious now. How I use my living quarters, and questioning, is it cost effective, mostly energy use and water. Vehicle use is under scrutiny also.

Try the Navy Shower https://military.wikia.org/wiki/Navy_shower and see how much water is saved by this practice in this article (-:

I have interesting conversations about the state we are in at the coffee shop, although I do not drink coffee. Sharing some of the newspaper articles as we read them. Life is good sitting inside the coffee shop, compared to other parts of the living world out there. Even in our local environ are issues to deal with. It takes a willingness and effort to stay informed. Perhaps I may come up with a good idea. I'm in a good mood, also hoping that Willy the whale can continue his life wherever he chooses it to be . . . Thank you!

The eternal question: is the glass half empty or half full. I’m hoping when it comes to climate change the glass is half full. Our state is finally going to commit to building those windmills off shore. Of course the wealthy people on the East End managed not to have off their shores. Doesn’t matter that they probably would not impede the view since they will be 15 miles from shore. This type of thinking needs to end. Climate change affects everyone.

On a happy note river otters have returned to LI. Steps have been built by dams so they can easily travel and stay away from roads. Let’s hope the ingenuity of humans will also help with climate change.

Thank you for going with the optimistic title. I enjoyed reading this on my way home.

Polar exploration - one of my favorite topics. And I agree with what you said about human ingenuity: "A common theme in these books is the human ingenuity to find the most daring and creative solutions when all hope is lost." Polar exploration is the perfect example of this. Martitime museums are great. I've been kicked out of a few - because they were closing... The Fram Museum in Oslo is my favorite when it comes to polar exploration, but I don't think I've been to one I didn't like. So many lessons to be learned about perseverance and as you said ingenuity and daring to go where others won't or haven't. That's exactly what we need to tackle climate change.

And I just realized again that living in a land-locked country is all wrong for me.

I like the title you chose. It’s characteristic of your approach in furthering awareness of the crisis you’ve championed for so long. Even when news is bleakest, you find a shred of optimism to push forward, a ray of hope to keep reaching for climate change goals. By spreading awareness with the idea we can win, it encourages new energy, new commitment. No one ever won by giving up or giving in. Joe Biden didn’t. Now more Americans believe we can win. Electing leaders who accept facts, science & the advice of experts is key for every country.

I choose optimism, the alternative is unacceptable.

Ok, please read to the end, this is not as dark as it may seem.

I’m an American. I have voted Democratic since I was able to vote. Each election, things became more Republican and worse for the average person. I watched my beloved mitten shaped state of Michigan turn from a great place to live and work into a state where the female Democratic Governor is literally threatened with trial and execution by mob. And now my best hope lies in Biden, a moderate Democrat who is 80 years old. And as far as the environmental issues go, I can’t help thinking that O/G industry is going to toy with us like a pod of orcas with a seal.

Yet, I will do as much as I can to work against climate change for the sake of future generations of the people and the plants and animals I love. For the thousands of Beluga whales that vacation in Canada and the mysterious Sperm whales that have more combinable “coda” signals than we have letters in the alphabet, for the Pink dolphins that rule the mythology of the Amazon river. I just need to know how to do it, which is why I’m here.

If this isn’t optimism, then what is it? As much as America has been way laid with monstrous gun freaks, corporations, and fascists lately, and of course we always had those things in us, we still have that little tiny hope that flies out of the box in the end. Because having hope and optimism, in addition to being crazy fanatics when needed, is also an American trait. Also to borrow from “Hamilton”, “we get the job done”. We put the coffee on at six am, drink it without cream and sugar, and we get the job done. Just hopefully it will be the “correct” job and not something truly crazy. That’s where “influence” comes in.
