Jimmy Carter has been undervalued by many, but you have enumerated his lesser known achievements very succinctly. His philanthropy is now his legacy. I will always remember him with his tool belt building homes for Habitat for Humanity; a truly decent, generous of spirit and kind man. Rest easy, President Carter, your work is finished.🕊️

“Speaking about a conflict between environmental quality and economic growth: I want to make it clear, if there is ever [such] a conflict, I will go for beauty, clean air, water, and landscape. ~ President Jimmy Carter”

President Carter gave us a blueprint for a life well lived. I truly believe he is one of the finest Americans to have ever lived.

Thank you for honoring him with this excellent piece.

Underlining both fact and homage: “The example of Jimmy Carter suggests that looking beyond the horizon can light our way to a better future – but also that, without political victory, the chance to realize that future can easily slip away.”

From HIS BEST: Jimmy Carter, A Life by Jonathan Alter, which I recommend reading.

Thank you for this heartwarming and realistic picture of President Carter. History will serve him rightly. I have to believe that his judgement at this time is as correct as it has served him throughout.

When I read President Carter was going into Hospice Care, I thought "please not today." There are those people, some family, friends and real-life heroes to whom I pay homage. I rest easier knowing they are in this world. President Carter is one of those people.

Humility is such a game changer for me because it is so powerful. Jimmy Carter was humble in the way he lived his everyday life and it showed. Saint Augustine: "It was pride that changed angels to devils; it is humility that makes men as angels."

President Carter saw the "greater good" as our common interest and responsibility; something bigger than ourselves. Such a stark contrast to most politicians on both sides today.

As Jimmy Carter transcends the ties of this earth, his legacy of unfailing service to his fellow man remains. And that will abide.

Just lovely Alex.

The link above shows why I like Jimmy Carter and think he was a good US president involved in humanitarian work where he showed as you say integrity and honesty. Thanks for praising him. Your homage resonates very right for me.

Beautiful commentary.

President Carter has long been scapegoated by Republicans. It's ridiculous, but that's the U.S.

To me and many others, President Carter is and will remain a true role model. An educator-environmentalist friend in California, Barbara McVeigh, has been working on Carter-inspired initiatives in California for years, and celebrates his birthday every October with political and media leaders.

In 2018, I had the honor of attending the annual forum on Defense of Human Rights at the Carter Center. It was much like a UN meeting, and I was amazed at how President Carter personally interacted with all the heads of state and organizational representatives from around the world.

The Carter Center is doing truly life-changing work.

For anyone who is interested in learning more about President Carter's environmentalism, two Swiss filmmakers made a wonderful documentary on this: "A Road Not Taken" https://www.roadnottaken.info/
