You have voiced what every person with reasonable intelligence should be thinking & asking each other. More importantly we should be asking the lawmakers. These tragedies occur so frequently they barely register as news more than a few days. They’re so commonplace it’s often difficult to distinguish between them. Children slaughtered in the one place they should be safest, often by another child. What is more horrific or barbaric? What kind of society can tolerate this happening again & again? The scenario you describe has become redundant. And still guns are held as prized possessions & the gun culture refuses to trade them for the lives of innocent children.

It seems the second amendment of the Constitution which states a well regulated militia should have access to guns is changed in the minds of legislators and gun owners to mean guns should be available to all. Unfortunately this means that unregulated guns are becoming increasingly prevalent. Thoughts and prayers won’t solve the mass shootings. Strict gun laws are needed in every state and the Wild West mentality needs to be suppressed. I doubt that this nation will ever see limited gun ownership but changes can be made to limit the tragedies of mass shootings. It is the public to press legislators to make those changes or vote in those who will.

I understand the perspective. If you think of America not in terms of “a set of decisions” but rather, “a set of emotions” I think you will see that the maelstrom of what we call America (and I write from within it) is more comprehensible. And the media reports on only a small, small segment of that emotional range. Emotion translates to decision, translates to physical experience... and we have it all here. Sway it in the direction you want to go. Vote, express, write... while understanding the emotional root at the heart of it all.

Such a mystery where she got the gun ... I have a hard time understanding US gun laws. A really hard time!

We had one mass shooting in Switzerland in September 2001, 14 people died. Laws were changed almost immediately after. One of the guns used was an army issued assault rifle that was present in a lot of households - it still is nowadays, but the ammunition is now kept separately. That was the biggest change made. It also got more difficult to obtain a gun licence as more and tougher background checks were introduced.

I get the importance of the second amendment, but ... they just can't continue like this forever.

Very nicely put. But, honestly, we in those "other 190 countries" are getting a bit tired of the stories with massive gun shootings in the USA. Lawmakers will not do ANYTHING unless their office tenure is threatened - so unless VOTERS act, nothing will happen. Recall heavy smokers after diagnosed with lung cancer, asking "Why cigarettes were not forbidden?" conveniently forgetting about health warnings on every pack of cigarettes that he/she opened. US voters have had sufficient numbers of warnings. Time to make a choice. Life or?

This article inspired me to read about the history of firearms and ownership. Using Google (My best friend) I found its history, and, old and currents laws. I will start reading "The History" part because it's not that old in the US. I suggest to give it a try by doing a Google search. This was my search criteria: 'history of gun ownership in america'. The result was a long list of articles, (about 12,500.000 results in 0.79 seconds) I picked one:

This has not been a good time for women in the US. The police who are supposed to “Protect and Serve” are not doing their jobs well. Gun Rights people look down and say “what a shame” when shootings happen, then immediately switch to “black on black” violence. Meanwhile, I feel vulnerable on nature paths. A few years ago, I read about how the majority of victims in mass shootings are rare. Very few mass shooters are female. In spite of the fact it’s a girl shooter this time, I can’t help thinking this is an aspect of a war against women. I have a lot if faith in Biden starting to fix this.
