Island Stories #38. The ponies live independently. Only twice a year do the rangers and volunteers round them up to tend to the hooves and give them a deworming treatment. The Shetland ponies ensure with their grazing and trampling that open areas remain in the dunes. We should keep them as independent as possible, they search for their food and shouldn't get it from visitors, but we should provide care when needed.
Loved the video of the ponies. Glad you were there and saw that one needed aid and helped. They are sweet and gentle creatures. What a wonderful place to spend your summer vacation. Enjoy, for all of us know, the days fly too quickly.
According to the last picture, I venture itβs Stockholm although I havenβt been there in too many years. Terrific photo and you captured the beauty of the view and light.π
Itβs wonderful and heartwarming to see the horses greet each other and interact. Some eagerly and some with hesitation. Animals are so wise and perceptive. They know they are safe with you.
a Sunday open pony herd Pow Wow meeting with all the members including you in. It won't be hard to learn how to 'snort' like them. It's what we learned as kids very quickly (-:
I'm glad you noticed the injured one and took action. Bravo !
It's always been a part of our daily shores to check up on the horses in pasture(and stall) to look for injuries, either from the fencing material, kicking/biting each other, or sick (reluctant to move or eat) for example.
The Ponies have daily routines, which is easy to pickup on.
Hooman means 'benevolent and good natured' in (Old?)Persian. Now sorta morphed into a more general use ea. caretaker of creatures, dogs, horses etc. Where animals speak about pets and others animals to humans spelling it "hooman" instead of "human".
Lovely wild ponies! We also have wild ponies in NC, supposedly from Spanish shipwrecks, but theyβre more of an orange color. The herd is also monitored to maintain the population. Itβs interesting that your wild ponies have an important role in grazing.
That is part of the fascinating history of how the horses returned to the Americas where they originated. There is a similar story of shipwrecked horses on an isolated island east of Canada.
The ponies look extremely well fed. Just north of my home along the Salt river there are lots of wild horses -itβs always a joy to the catch a glimpse of them
The ponies seem so genuinely happy to see you. I am sure they are becoming more accustomed to your being near. I enjoyed hearing them "speak" and also so enjpyed seeing them being petted. So nice to imagine it for oneself. I haven't seen a horse in a while, but I really love them. We had them living down the street from us years ago. But the wild ponies must surely be happier living in the dunes than in someone's back pasture. It's good you were around to care for the pony. I am happy to hear that the ponies are treasured and well taken care of by the forest rangers. It looks like you are enjoying your summer there on the island, Alexander. It's nice to hear about your adventures. I hope that you are healing well. It looks like a great place to do that. Thank you for the beautiful glimpse into island life. Here in the dunes, we do not have wild horses, but we do have wild bunnies. There are mostly cotton tails, but there is one very cute black bunny who is my favourite! We have splendid blue fairy wrens, too. Dunes and the bush around it are the ideal living environments for so much wildlife. It's wonderful to be able to see and enjoy animals in their habitats.
Thank you, seems that you also live in a beautiful place. There are no more bunnies here, or hardly any. When I grew up there were rabbits everywhere in the dunes but they were wiped out by introduced diseases. That is part of the reason why the ponies, sheep, and Scottish Highland cattle were introduced. Their grazing takes over the role of the rabits.
Yes, it is beautiful here. Thank you, Alexander. The dunes are not as large as those in Holland, but I still love them. ...
Oh wow. I had no idea. I do remember that many of the rabbits had to be culled off and on some years ago in the Dunes there due to disease, but wasn't aware that they were gone. Poor things. ... The cottontails here are not native, but are a part of the landscape and there is much clover for them to munch on. I am glad to see them.

Yes, you are right, it was Stockholm. It is easy to take nice photographs in beautiful Stockholm.
Alex, you are now in the paradise! The ponies are wonderful creatures! I think they want to say hello to you one by one!! π
Yes, living here feels like paradise :-)

At a later moment, there was also briefly less harmony, the hierarchy had to be set and one pony pushed back another one.
Oh no. I hope no pony pushed you!!
Thank you so much for sharing your amazing world. Your friends are adorable.
Thank you, Jen. And, yes, they are!
What a wonderful park! I would go there every day if I lived so near.
I can imagine, William, I do live so near and go there nearly every day.
A beautiful moment in your island paradise. Thank you for sharing the wonder.
glad you enjoy it :-)

Thank you, Marian, I hope to hear back when the working week starts if any action is taken for the horse.

What a special moment that must have been. Thank you for sharing it with us.
And your 'back page' is one of my favorite cities. Beautiful shot.
