Data, to me, are stories that help create a narrative using details, facts & intelligence. Why should we care? Why should we collectively fund projects such as PREFIRE and CubeSats? Stories such as Father Goose and the Nevada Bumblebee (I first thought it was a bee you photographed in Nevada) foster my interest and emotions.
I may not be able to decipher scientific data, however leading geese home in an ultralight and saving bees from the sidewalk, you now have my attention. As a grant writer, I use many forms of data to tell stories of communities I represent and why funding is needed. It is a delicate balance making data meaningful and memorable.
You have done a wonderful job of both, capturing my interest within an overwhelming and hard to focus subject matter. Perspective is everything. Whether it be a newly discovered galaxy or a Nevada Bumblebee, "Life is a journey of constant change; embrace the unknown." Gracias. Posibilidades infinitas.
Thank you Sharon, Only halfway the article, that grew during a week of evening writing, I started to realize it was all about perspective. The title reflects that insight. It may come back more often. On the other hand, it's not entirely new; it follows from the 'keeping me sane by escaping into nature' approach. I have been shifting perspectives for a while but only here added this label.

So, today learned that there is a bumblebee that lives in the Arctic, that there is a publication called “Frontiers in Bee Science”, that sometimes we can’t really warm to icy monuments, how to save a bumblebee’s life and how to change my perspective in many different ways.
We went from microorganisms, to bumblebees, to sculptures, to ice shelfs the size of Oregon, to far away galaxies. And our memories of historical events like the Sputnik Crisis, the Cold War and the Space Race were expertly linked to the “opposite” perspective of the PREFIRE mission.
I love when your stream of consciousness writing and your excellent storytelling join forces. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this.
Great deal of information to parse here! I’m going for the pollinator and photo as my favorite part. A small bite on a lazy morning after a week of absurd scrambling, moaning, complaining, usual but worse fare in 🇺🇸 before later, today maybe, 🤔, I rejoin fight for freedom and a touch of sanity here; as if my small persistent efforts could change one small headed outcome. We retain HOPE and look to you for inspiration as always in coping with the nearly impossible.

In switching between big (space) and small (bumblebees and micro-organisms), I skipped politics and show-masters. The human sized aspects were limited here to children playing, or the innocence of ordering a drink in a cafe. As a former diplomat, I so much enjoy days of not writing about politics, even though all solutions sadly require politics; they're never far from my mind, but sometimes far from my stories.
I enjoy rare days of reading nothing about politics; such compulsive behavior as one voting citizen is counterproductive to my mental health and objectivity on days I do my part to maintain freedom and bring down Project 2025, a must to defeat TFG. I do think 🤔 that anybody could fill the executive in that mandate but just maybe MAGA voters are not perceptive enough to “get that.” TFG is rapidly declining and there are ways to cut the head off the snake. Enough, back to playing! I don’t know how you survived being a diplomat, but pleased you did and can call on that experience to fill your writing as needed currently. Not sure that came from the Apple Pencil ✏️ just right but you know where I’m going with this! Good night, 😴, dear friend!
A story of crossed destinies on our blue planet! What a fascinating reading of these “leaps” so well orchestrated in History.
What a destiny! : the ancient competition between two countries for the conquest of space is finally opening a door to the study of climate change!
And the wonderful discovery seen from the plane, thanks to Bill Lishman, also author of an iceberg sculpture which gives food for thought on the immensity of these blocks of ice compared to the Arctic tundra.
Could he imagine that the polar lands would be in full revolution today, just like the path of the birds...
And this magnificent furry bumblebee whose survival is now in danger and whose warm fur takes us back to these polar regions and the current imbalance of the ecosystem...
A story, with drawers whose destinies intersect in so many different eras...
Bravo Alex for this beautiful narration which transports us to different periods of history, through your multiple changes of point of view.
And above all, knowing how to change perspective, as you say 🙏 and do so well, can help us calm down today by taking a step back from our concerns for the future of our Earth, by focusing on the beautiful things that surround us every day and know how to admire them (however small they may be)!
