What a fascinating family history!

Your Dutch roots are deeply grounded in this historic place. No wonder it feels like home to you. It is!

For centuries it’s been your family’s home.

How wonderful these archives are available so you can research your origins.

Who needs Ancestry.com? 😊

Regardless of the theme, the stories you share from your island are endlessly compelling and a delight to read. The photos only enhance the beauty.

Thank you for another lovely story from the island.

I just drifted away a bit reading that. Must have been quite something living in Zierikzee way back when. What a fascinating family history you have. Also a bit scandalous. Thank you for sharing it.

Great pictures. I love those Zierikzee shutters! And the slightly crooked reflection in the left lower window of the oldest house - wow. Now wondering why I never noticed the Kleine Kerk when you shared pictures of that square and that building. So much history to explore. What a town.

It’s wonderful that you are able to trace your history and walk the same streets as your ancestors. I think there is a unique sense of knowing and a inner unexplainable peace that one feels.

I agree. I am appalled at the current mindset. More money, more “stuff”, spend spend spend. Never enough.

Don’t get me wrong! I like my “stuff”, too!

I bought my car in December 2005. I take care of it. It runs well. I don’t need a new one every other year. I don’t need a $2000 purse.

I don’t expect everyone to agree with me, but I would like to see less emphasis on things, & more on society & more for the health & welfare of everyone, which includes our one & only planet.

As the Bible says, the love of money is the root of all evil. Less emphasis on me me me, & more on us us us.

Interesting. I’ve done a little tracing of my family tree, mostly on my Mother’s side, as they have been here the longest. Of course, I’m lucky to find anything back to the early 1800’s! Fascinating that you can go back so far. I’ve been told that the history in Europe is everywhere, while here in the States, many (most?) places are “new”. I don’t know that I’m expressing myself well with that thought. I wonder how that affects our attitude about things.

Your home place is beautiful. You really have deep routes there. Thank you for sharing.

Tracing back one’s history is possible thanks to the written records made in Europe mostly by the church clerks. Is it so in your country ?

Katharina’s husband Willem caught all my attention since it’s also a very popular name here and my favorite grandfather went by the sweet name Wilhelm.

Nice of you sharing your history and findings.

Super interesting how you've come full circle with your family. I wonder what 23&Me (or some other DNA test) would reveal.
