Some 50 million years ago, a pig-like, four-legged animal species that a scientist once described as looking like a cross between a hippopotamus and an otter evolved and entered the water.
For decades I have been angry about the precarious future of the manatees. If we forever lose these beautiful, gentle souls, I will likely lose all hope for humanity.
Another excellent writing for the plight of the underdog, a creature that lives a placid life causing no harm to the planet.
How typical that the pacifist who only contributes without taking is endangered after living docilely on the planet for millions of years. And how typical you would undertake their cause.
Indeed they deserve protection!
The example of the bee scientist is perfect. Only humans would fail to protect the creatures who provide their very existence.
A wonderful article and rendering!
And Iβm happy to see Luna has put her indiscretion behind her and has restored her position in the home . She looks content and forgiven.
Articles like this surely deserve a drop in the tip jar.
Very cool article Alex. I had the opportunity to swim/snorkel around manatees in Playa De Carmen Mexico at a marine habitat.
When you see these beautiful creatures in their natural habitat it is simply magic. I did not appreciate then how fragile their existence is nor did I recognize what their loss means to this planet and to humanity.
Ubuntu is a South African term meaning I am because you are. You are because I am. We are all tied together, humans & animals. These gentle giants deserve a safe harbor in our seas. They deserve to thrive. Thank you for being their voice.
Poor manatees. I love that you called them gentle giants. What a lovely tribute to them. I passed this article on to two friends in Florida. The bees might be right in their assessment that we are not very intelligent - destroying the planet the way we are.
I'll admit that I always scroll to the end to see if there's a picture of Luna. Good to know she's keeping an eye on things. Adorable picture. Thanks for sharing.

This is so sad :(
Thank you, Alexander
In goodness we have to think about them as a 'Spirit Animal', do no harm at the highest level.
I love your image of the Manatee . . .
Somehow I believe that not many people know of their existence ):
