I have pitched a tent at the foot of a gracious Sequoia and slept in peace . . .

Thank you for writing about these glorious giants!! I had to opportunity to see these giants about 8 years ago. I was just in aww. The enormity of them is just breath taking. With climate change and all these fires, I worry that one day they'll be gone. Once again , thank you for writing about them.

Thank you, and yes, I share your worries. Also about all the tiny species that we don't see that are dying out as we speak.

So sad, those trees are magical. The "looking up" you describe is one of my favorite things to do. In 2010 we went on a "tree tour" of Californian National Parks: Redwood, Sequoia and Joshua Tree. I have such fond memories of especially the Sequoias. I'm just looking through my pictures from back then ... There's so much at stake and time is clearly running out.

Thank you for all those interesting facts about the Sequoias. A well-written piece. I think I need to go for a walk in the local forest right now and possibly just hug a tree.

I love this piece at least as much as any one to date & I’ve loved them all.

“Standing on the forest floor and looking up, they seemed to grow into infinity.” These words & the vision they inspire touch my soul with wonder. I shall keep both in a special place on my imaginary silver shelf.

Thank you for this.

If you use "desperate" in the heading, does it give a sense that we can do something? Just a thought...!

Thank you, Dave. Of course, the firefighters do what they can, but they fight the symptoms of a warming planet and they may be able to cool a burning house or tree, but for cooling a planet we need responsible national leaders treat an emergency like an emergency.
