Watching the drama unfold this morning after your Twitter/X post was startling. Thank you for bringing that particular issue regarding the activists to the front of the line.
Itβs such a maddening situation that those who try to protect us are put in jail but not a single person who deliberately kept the knowledge about climate change from us, and instead funded climate change denial campaigns, has ever been prosecuted. Iβm not a fan of the road blocking campaigns, but the absurdity of it all shows the failing of our system.
I was a little behind the news of the flooding in Spain, but it didnβt take me long to work it out from your Noteβ¦πππ
Re this post, it always astounds me how people speak to each other onlineβ¦so it makes me so appreciate your tone here, which with a touch of irony simply reflects the facts, with a quiet wonder underneath. And I feel pretty certain you wandered off for a coffee, or some natural beauty and kept your sweet smile intactβ¦
And that is the reflection we need so much right nowβ¦Thank you, Alex! ππ»ππ»ππ»
Your picture from yesterday appeared on the front page of my NYT today. But your facts and simple description of what climate change can and IS doing to our planet is far different from their interpretation. True, I skimmed the long article inside the paper, but the words βclimate changeβ never appear. Iβm so disappointed in their coverage compared to your non-histrionic piece. You write so beautifully
II really do live in a bubble. It is only in the last 10-15 years I have realized that many people do not understand irony and many are very concrete and abstract comments seem 'silly' to them. One of the reasons I try to listen first, so I know better how to communicate. Strange obvious lesson to learn so late in life. I think it is another reason that I haven't found social media attractive. I'm looking forward to exploring your stack.
I just wish more people would take the time to listen (or read) first before judging. It seems that social media has reduced our capacity to do so. Substack (and Medium) are for those who want to know and learn, itβs not for the clicks and likes. And yes, irony is not for everyone. I donβt use it often since people with varied backgrounds follow me. But the real world irony of the contrast between the horrible floods and some Brits missing a meeting because of the M25 blockade by activists warning for these kinds of events (made worse by human-made climate change) is so extreme that I chose for some irony in the messaging.

The cars mangled on the flooded streets of Spain was a sad but powerful message!
Sad and with a better warning system in place the number of deaths should have been lower.

Thank you, Nancie!

This controversy shocked me a lot... All these instinctive, uninhibited, aggressive reactions!
This truth, this reality of the climate change situation is still so difficult to admit that controversy or sanction remains an answer for many.
Like this very unfairly disproportionate fate reserved for these activists who βjustβ tried, in their own way, to warn about climate change!
Being heard or speaking out on this very hot topic exposes to strong criticism.
All that is worrying and sad.
Thank you Alex π for staying constantly vigilant and being a voice that must be heard, encouraged, shared by all those who listen to you.
Thank you, DaniΓ¨le. Iβm just a small voice but together we can be loud.
Interesting to read about the activists and the real culprists.
And deeply concerned about those people involved in Valencia/Spain.
Thanks for all.

about what is happening to our planet. Please keep smiling and drinking your coffee βοΈ but do continue to give us the FACTSβ¦ π©
Thank you, Anne. Iβll do both (the coffee and the facts).

βReal world ironyβ is a good distinction, and the juxtaposition was powerful.
Iβm not thrown in jail but some young people have now to spend up to five years in jail just for warning us against events like this.
