Today's dead canary in the climate coal mine lies in Ottawa; tomorrow, it may be found where you live or elsewhere on the planet, with deadly consequences for many people. Think of the kinds of disasters that make the loss of a winter tradition just a minor casualty of the climate crisis.
It always feels weird to like something that is well-written, but on a difficult topic. There should be a *I like the writing, but the topic sucks* button.
Already commented this morning but wanted to add how very sorry I am that the climate crisis has involved you now at your home; even disrupting your attempt to escape into nature for just a little relief during the summer walking the Camino de Santiago with Covid masks to avoid the smoke from forest fires π₯ nearby. There is no escape it would seem; how very sad for all of us on Planet Earth π. And how difficult to maintain hope that government officials will take action soon enough to salvage a livable semblance of what is possible now. People talk of getting back to normal,
survivors of Covid, but that normal is gone. The reality of what is now is simply incomprehensible to the minds of so many.
No, I didn't think you'd ever write about winter in Ottawa being too warm. It's a scary trend. There might still be hope for this skating season, but the trend is very clear. Soon skating on the Rideau Canal will be a memory parents tell their children about. I hope you don't mind that I played around with the numbers a bit and posted a graph with a trendline on Twitter.
I miss having a real winter here. I'm lucky enough to be able to go up into the mountains to get the winter feeling. Many places are also struggling with lack of snow or only very short winter seasons.
Thank you for reminding us that we are running out of time.
What a spectacular breathtaking sunset in Ottawa. Even more to pause & appreciate amidst dealing with our climate crisis. How unfortunate the warmer temperatures are preventing the ice to form. I recently saw photos of polar bears and penguins unable to have homes. We all must speak up and act.
Iβm so very sorry you may not have the opportunity to skate this winter season. As you mentioned, perhaps it is an outlier event. But the painful reality seems to be our world is changing everywhere, taking traditions and lives from our beautiful planet. We must all work harder to salvage wherever we can; forcing our governments to respond before the worst happens. β€οΈ the π; ACT NOW.
Iβll tell you. You address/write/podcast women on how they are being affected by climate change and provide practical tools on how we can actually help, the planet may have some solid chance to survive. It would be like doing mea culpa, as men are screwing up the planet, even though you are a good and obviously committed environmentalist. You may want to try to enlist the help of βfeministβ environmentalists, if you havenβt done it yet, of course. On the other hand you may lose followers, there are very few men who care about women and the environment vs wildlife and the environment.
I 'hearted' this post, but I certainly don't love the fact that this iconic ice skating rink is unusable. :(

Stunning sunset!
