Indeed our world is in turmoil and suffering and angst abound.

But you deserve a break from all the worries in the world to celebrate your special day with friends in beautiful surroundings.

I’m happy you did.

Happy Birthday, my dear friend.

For my part, I hope you continue writing about whatever inspires and/or concerns you.

You always make the best decisions. Don’t change.

Thank you Lizzie, Sorry for the late reply, I just found out I completely forgot to answer all these kind messages that I had read on my phone but not replied to yet. I'll keep writing about different themes, but the US politics will get more attention than usual, just because the developments are unusual too.

Thank you, the importance of this election and the next three months is paramount, not only to the US, but globally. As you know.

Hi Alex,

I think the best β€œbirthday present” you could have gotten was to be with friends, surround yourself with those beautiful dunes (and the wonderful Shetland ponies)

and for your natal day just forget the horrors going on in the rest of the world.

Thank you for this lovely

β€˜reflection’ ❣️

Thank you, Anne, I only found your reply today, which makes me briefly relive that nice day. A birthday is special, but I spend here every day some time in nature and the insteresting thing is that it stays special, in any season and any place. Yesterday, I saw two deer running away in the forest when I arrived for my morning swim. This morning, I didn't see animals, but I enjoy the flowers and the changing of the colors. The fresh green of spring is now a more mature, darker green and the first dots of heather appear to add purple to the many hues of nature on this island. It's a joy to live here for a while before moving to another country again.

Completely forgot to reply to this. I hope you had a very happy birthday.

As others have said I love the variety you offer. Especially when you put everything into one newsletter - history, geography, art, nature, culture, music. I mean, I probably only spot a fraction of the references especially the song lyric - but I like your unique perspective and the connections your brain makes so effortlessly.

If I were to make a request or two - your island stories were wonderful as is anything with Luna in it 😊.

Thank you for responding late, it is only through your reply of this morning that I realized I had not answered anyone even though I had read the replies. Luna lies next to me now, she sleeps well on the sound of my keyboard.

Alexander, Luna will appreciate that US felines will be voting for the Harris-Walz ticket, as seen on the Borowitz substack 🀣🀣 Likely Luna is with them in spirit :)

Wishing you a belated Happy Birthday, Alexander. I am away at my own idyllic, island retreat, and enjoying the more limited connection to the news cycle and the company of Alyssa. She sends her best wishes as well. I echo Lizzie’s comment. You write, and I/we will read. Your choices and the balance you attain between world politics, climate, beauty in the world around us, history, etc works just fine for my tastes. Thanks.

Thank you, Mike. Please send my regards to Alyssa!

Happiest of birthdays to you, dear Alexander!

It is uplifting to read of your fun with friends and time in nature.

I appreciate that you always maintain perspective, keeping personal life in context with the world at large. Trueβ€”this is a super-election year, at least half of the world's nations are having significant elections, and the US is a big (scary) one. But birthdays are important, as is our personal healthβ€”Trump doesn't deserve our precious energy.

Wishing you many more happy birthdays!

Thank you Mischa, forgive me my late reply. Yes, we shouldn't spend to much time on fear for the bully, and that is now so much easier since humor and optimism is back in the race. Suddenly the fear is less and the hope is up. This feels like a good season.

Apologies not needed, Alexander! Thankfully, change in life is inevitable, and it does seem like this new Harris-Walz ticket may bring happy surprises. Stay strong and take good care!

Indeed a pivotal moment. Three more months until election. We need to stay focused on the US for now. World freedom depends on it. Trump promises to be a dictator. Might be the only truth out of his mouth ever.

haha yes, sadly that's how he is. I'm still puzzled why anyone would ever vote for someone from whom you wouldn't ever considder buying a second hand car.

Hahaha indeed!

Regarding US politics and "the gravity of the current situation and its potential global ramifications deserve continued attention"...given the next three months being time limited, and critical that democracy prevails, my preference is for your continued attention.

Ending on an up note, I wish you a Happy Birthday and positivity and happiness in the year to come. The planet is fortunate for you having a place on it :)

Thank you, Mary, and I'm happy having a place on this planet. We all just get one ticket for just one ride, and we don't know when the ride ends. So however bad the situation may get, never forget to enjoy the ride too; it's all we ever have.

Happy belated birthday πŸŽ‚ your day sounds peaceful 🌹 I will be voting for Kamala and hope we maintain control of the Senate and gain the House.

Thank you Shelley. I would have loved to vote for her too if I would have your passport :-)

I feel a land slide win for her! My only superpower is my vote against Trump and my vote for Kamala β€οΈπŸ€πŸ’™ Be Well 🫢🏻

i'm with you, but as a European, and some 96% of the people on this planet, without a vote. I'll send some positive vibes on November 5

So pleased you enjoyed another birthday on your island paradise. Insulated from world events. That is a gift to appreciate. Write whatever moves you; we will always enjoy. We in America are in the next couple of days awaiting the Vice President’s choice of a running mate which could be very consequential. Then we look forward to eliminating Trumpism and the poster boys from our rhetoric in November but they will throw cogs in the wheels of tradition, you can count on it. Legal or otherwise, unless he really wins to prove we are more insane than otherwise, there will be chaos involved. We’re getting ready for the fight for our Democracy. I do believe we will prevail but it may be rough going in heavy seas.

The fight will start right after the last vote: creating so much chaos that the votes of the voters can't be counted and then the House and the Supreme Court can abuse their Republican majority.

You are likely correct but let us hope πŸ•ŠοΈ at least our 90 days to regain some sanity and the will to cast off the monster in such a scenario. Perhaps a change in SCOTUS can be accomplished while Biden remains in office.
