The North Atlantic right whales suffer from vessel strikes and entanglements in fishing gear at such a rate that the deaths of the whales may be outnumbering their reproduction numbers.
Very encouraging to see the increase in whale calves & very disheartening to see how human activity has driven these magnificent creatures to near extinction. It would be easy to think the massive size of whales would make them almost invulnerable to peril but even comparatively small things like nets & ropes are life threatening & enormous marine traffic callously invades their habitat.
The NOAA video is excellent & it’s amazing to see how they can track & rescue those in trouble.
Your photos are wonderful, especially the reflection of the Parliament building. I really love the sketch & it’s always nice to see you! The peatlands photo & story is a terrific article to revisit.
