This morning, I wrote about the historical pattern of democracies silencing their own senators. Hours later, Minnesota state legislators Melissa Hortman and John Hoffman were shot in their homes by a gunman impersonating police.
The eerie timing haunts me. While I was tracing the line from Seneca's forced suicide to Senator Padilla's handcuffing, actual political assassinations were unfolding in American suburbs.
